PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a remote monitoring system and a remote monitoring method allowing serious abnormality to be easily notified. SOLUTION: The system is equipped with a monitoring device 12 in which levels of the abnormality in hot water supply devices 110, 120 is set, respectively, and an alarm signal including this level of the abnormality is generated when the abnormality occurs in the hot water supply devices 110, 120; and a remote monitoring device 22 in which, according to the level of the abnormality of the hot water supply devices 110, 120, minor failure or serious failure is set in advance, from the level of the abnormality indicated by the alarm signal from the monitoring device 12, to determine the minor failure or the serious failure. Furthermore, the remote monitoring device 22 notifies the occurrence of the serious failure to a cellular phone, when determined as the serious failure, and stops the notice of the occurrence of the minor failure to the cellular phone when determined as the minor failure and the alarm signal indicating the minor failure is received continuously.
