Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fixing device in which faulty separation of recording material is reduced, and an image forming apparatus equipped with the fixing device. SOLUTION: A gap sensor (reflection type photosensor or laser system sensor) 103 for detecting the length of a gap between a fixing belt 1 and a separation plate 12 is attached to the inside of the fixing device. Relation among the length of the gap, the kind of paper and the margin width of the leading edge of the paper is recorded in a look-up table (LUT) 106 according to both of the length of the gap and the kind of paper, and an image processing means 104 is controlled and adjusted to obtain a corresponding margin area at the leading edge of the recording material 10 based on the detected length of the gap and the kind of paper.
