Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a quantitative evaluation method concerning behavior of water in a proton conductive membrane with substantial proton conductivity under environments of low temperature and low humidity. SOLUTION: In the membrane-electrode assembly for a polymer electrolyte fuel cell with an anode electrode provided on one face of a proton conductive membrane and a cathode electrode on the other face, the proton conductive membrane consists of a copolymer having an ion-conductive polymer segment (A) and an non-ion-conductive polymer segment (B), and when it is cooled down to -20°C after being dipped in water, heated at 90°C for 30 minutes, and made to absorb water, has a multiplier (a multiplied value) of a weight (g) of water not frozen out of absorbed water (per 1 g of copolymer) and a self diffusion coefficient [×10-10m2/s] within the range of 0.2 to 1.5.
