PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a copolymer of a vinyl compound obtained by copolymerizing the vinyl compound having a highly bulky substituent with a linear α-olefin, and producing the copolymer having a higher molecular weight. SOLUTION: This method for producing the copolymer of the vinyl compound, containing a monomer unit based on the specific vinyl compound and a monomer unit based on the linear α-olefin, and having 5 to 40 mol% content of the monomer unit based on the vinyl compound and 95 to 60 mol% content of the monomer unit based on the linear α-olefin is provided by copolymerizing the vinyl compound with the linear α-olefin in the presence of a polymerization catalyst containing a specific transition metal complex as a component of the polymerization catalyst.
