Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing method and apparatus capable of performing a vectorizing process by appropriately dividing a clip art image including gradations into regions. SOLUTION: A color document image including a clip art image with a gradation part is input, the clip art image is selected, and the contour information of the clip art image is extracted. The color document image is separated into an uncolored portion and a colored portion; the uncolored portion and the colored portion are each divided into a plurality of regions. Of the pluralities of regions of the uncolored portion and the colored portion divided in this region-dividing process, the regions meeting set requirements are integrated together.
