PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display a peripheral map and the current position and destination of a user himself/herself of a personal digital assistant on the display panel of it in an urban area. SOLUTION: This position information providing system comprises the personal digital assistant 1 having an electronic tag reader 12 and a GPS signal receiving function 4, and a message board 20 having a plurality of electronic tags 23 one-on-one corresponding to a plurality of destinations existing on the street map and this map. Each of the plurality of electronic tags 23 stores a table showing the names and positions of the plurality of destinations and designation information having the peripheral map including these destinations. The electronic tag reader 12 reads the designation information from one of the plurality of electronic tags and displays the peripheral map included in the destination information on the display panel 9 of the assistant, and displays the position of at least one destination and the position of the assistant obtained from the GPS signal receiving function 4 on the peripheral map.
