Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a film damage detector which enables detecting fine damage flaws of widths of ≤0.2 mm with high precision and a method of detecting damage of a film. SOLUTION: The detecting method comprises adding an iron type coagulant to raw water 10 from a coagulant injection device 8 arranged in the raw water tank 2 so that the concentration of iron ion in the raw water 10 reaches 10-30 mg/L, generating nanobubbles of diameters of 0.01-1 μm in the raw water 10 by using a nanobubble generator 11, introducing the raw water 10 involving the nanobubbles into a membrane module 4 to filter through a filtration membrane 10 so as to remove target matter and detecting leakage of the nanobubbles into the filtrate having passed through the filtration membrane 7 by a nanobubble detector 12.
