Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable improvement in the contrast of a received image irrespective of the luminance distribution of the image. SOLUTION: A image processing method disclosed herein takes notice of one pixel of a luminance signal Yi sequentially received from a pre-stage in a step S31, and discriminates whether or not the pixel belongs to a background in a step S32. When it is discriminated that the pixel belongs to the background, the processing proceeds to a step S33 and the count of a background counter is incremented by one. Conversely, when it is discriminated that the pixel does not belong to the background, the processing proceeds to a step S34, wherein the frequency of the pixel corresponding to the luminance signal Yi is incremented by one. After the method takes notice of pixels by one image and thereafter the count of the background counter is divided by a gradation number of the dynamic range of the luminance in a step S36, and the quotient is added to the frequency of each luminance by one image except the background in a step S37. The present invention can be applied to apparatuses for outputting images such as television receivers. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
