PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make distance control and distance warning for a selected leading vehicle fit to a passenger feeling by enabling earlier start or cancel of selection of the leading vehicle. SOLUTION: Selection as the leading vehicle is canceled, when its predictive lateral position is out of the region of the own vehicle lane although the current lateral position is in a region of the own vehicle lane. The selection as the leading vehicle is kept, when the current lateral position is in the region of the own vehicle lane and the predictive lateral position is also in the region of the own vehicle lane. When the current lateral position is out of the region of the own vehicle lane, and the predictive lateral position is in the region of the own vehicle lane, selection as the leading vehicle is started. When the lateral position is out of the region of the own vehicle lane, and the predictive lateral position is also out of the region of the own vehicle lane, selection of the leading vehicle is not made. Herewith, by considering the predictive lateral position, proper selection as the leading vehicle can be made under a variety of conditions, thereby realizing proper distance control and distance warning.
