Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical encoder for outputting a sine wave signal. SOLUTION: The optical encoder 100 has an optical encoder pattern comprising an alternate pattern of light elements and dark elements, and an optical unit 103, the optical unit 103 includes a luminous radiator 101 for supplying light to the optical encoder pattern, and a photosensor 102 including a photodetector for receiving the light from the optical encoder pattern, and for outputting, in response thereto, the sine wave signal of indicating relative moving between the photosensor 102 and the optical encoder pattern, in the optical encoder 100. In one embodiment, the photodetector 720 is a rhombus, deformed rhombus or hour glass shape. In another embodiment, at least one is a rhombus, deformed rhombus or hour glass shape, out of the light elements 930 and the dark elements 940 of the optical encoder patterns 905, 1005A, 1005B, 1005C, 1005D, 1105A, 1105B, 1105C 1105D.
