Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shot boundary detection apparatus capable of extracting a shot boundary called instantaneous cut with high accuracy even from a general moving picture. SOLUTION: The shot boundary detection apparatus acquires luminance information of a frame being a discrimination object of an instantaneous cut and frames before and after the frame, and obtains an optimum scaling parameter when the discrimination object frame is composed with the preceding and succeeding frames. The shot boundary detection apparatus obtains a sum of square errors of luminance values of whole pixels on the basis of a luminance difference between a composite frame and the discrimination object frame obtained by applying the obtained optimum scaling parameter to the preceding and succeeding frames, and an instantaneous cut discrimination means 5 discriminates whether or not the discrimination object frame is the instantaneous cut by using the luminance difference for a feature quantity.
