Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection display apparatus to restrain degradation in light use efficiency by restraining unnecessary reflection without forming an anti-reflection coating on each of dichroic mirrors. SOLUTION: A polarization conversion element 4 adjusts the polarization direction of white light emitted from a light source 1 to P polarization so that lights transmitted through and reflected from the Y light reflection dichroic mirror 6, G light reflection dichroic mirror 7, and B light reflection dichroic mirror 20 are converted to P polarization lights in relation to the corresponding dichroic mirrors. Using the dichroic mirrors, the P polarized white light is separated into colored lights having three primary colors. The separate colored lights are modulated by corresponding reflection type liquid crystal devices 29, 30, and 31. The modulated colored lights are composed by a cross dichroic prism 18.
