Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanism for use in a can opener with a hand or an automatic driving means. SOLUTION: The mechanism for the can opener comprises a body, a drive wheel 10 fixed to a first axis 14 of the body and a cutter wheel 20 fixed to a second axis 24 of the body. A cutting knife 28 is fixed to the cutting wheel 20 eccentrically. The cutting knife 28 can be moved to a cutting position along rotation of the cutter wheel 20 to form a nip with the drive wheel 10 and the cutting knife 28 penetrates through the cylindrical wall of a can to provide a cut. The cutting position is defined by a cutting interval corresponding to a segment of rotation of the cutter wheel 20. An intermittent drive means is provided in the cutter wheel 20 to provide intermittent drive when the cutting knife 28 is in the cutting position, so as to maintain the nip in place for a sufficient cutting interval in a drive wheel 12 and the cutter wheel 20 to provide a full orbital cut around the cylindrical wall of the can.
