Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a defect managing method to manage the defects on an optical disk depending on whether alternative blocks are assigned or not. SOLUTION: This method adds the linear replacement control (LRC) bits to the secondary defect list (SDL) entry to discriminate the defective block information listed in the SDL entry according to the linear replacement algorithm and the defective block information listed in the SDL entry according to the skipping algorithm, and thus enables the optical recording medium recording/reproducing device 600 to transmit the correct information to the host. Further, when a defective block is found requiring an alternative block while recording or reproducing the data in the state that the spare areas are all used, LRC bits are set in the SDL entry with the defective block position information without performing linear replacement to show that the SDL entry is made corresponding to the state when the spare areas are all used. Thus, when rewriting or recreating the dataa later, the data are not written in the defective block or the data in the defective block are not read. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
