Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal lens that can change its refracting power independently of the polarized direction of the incident light by applying a voltage, and obtain a temporary head unit using this liquid crystal lens. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal lens has transparent substrates facing each other, one of which has a Fresnel lens plane made of a transparent isotropic material on its surface facing the other substrate, and a liquid crystal layer disposed between those transparent substrates and consisting of positive dielectric anisotropic cholesteric liquid crystals or nematic liquid crystals added with a chiral agent. The height d[nm] of the convex of the Fresnel lens surface, the twist pitch P[nm] of the liquid crystal molecules of the filled liquid crystal, and the distance G[nm] between the two transparent substrate are predetermined values, thereby it is possible to obtain a liquid crystal lens that can switch its refractive power independently of the polarized direction of the incident linear polarized light by applying a voltage to the liquid crystal layer from the outside.
