Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for melting a metal stably in a high yield by electron beam melting. SOLUTION: The method for melting a metal by electron beam melting comprises the steps of: feeding a raw material 10 from a raw material feeder 20; melting the raw material 10 in a hearth 40 by an electron beam irradiation means 50; and continuously solidifying the molten metal in a mold 6, wherein the raw material is fed from the front end of the feeder disposed in an area perpendicularly and upwardly distant by 200 to 1,000 mm/m2per unit effective area of the hearth from the surface of the molten metal 11 formed by melting the raw material 10 held in the hearth 40. The apparatus for melting the metal by electron beam melting comprises: a raw material feeder for feeding a raw material; a hearth for melting the raw material; a mold for continuously solidifying the raw material; and an electron beam irradiation means for heating the hearth and the mold, wherein the front end of the feeder is disposed in an area perpendicularly and upwardly distant by 200 to 1,000 mm/m2per unit effective area of the hearth from the surface of a molten metal formed by melting the raw material held in the hearth.
