Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact waveguide type optical module comprising an array optical waveguide coupled with a plurality of light emitting elements in which intensity of the light emitting element can be easily and inexpensively observed at a low cost, and to provide a method for monitoring the guided light in the module. SOLUTION: The waveguide type optical module includes a plurality of light emitting elements, a multimode optical waveguide having an array structure to transmit the light emitting from the respective light emitting elements, a branching waveguide core having a branch between the light emitting element side of each main waveguide core and the other side, a coupling waveguide core where two or more branched waveguide cores are coupled, and a monitoring light accepting element to monitor the light from the coupling waveguide core, wherein the main waveguide core and the branched waveguide core or the coupling waveguide core intersect in one plane. The method for monitoring light emitting elements in the waveguide type optical module is carried out by turning on each or simultaneously a plurality of the light emitting elements coupled to the main waveguide cores, accepting the light from the light emitting elements in the monitoring light accepting elements, and monitoring the module by the information acquired by the monitoring light accepting elements.
