Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a disk drive of a continuous medium or a patterned medium having a low BAR and comprising a magneto resistive read head having a high track crossing spatial resolution. SOLUTION: The disk drive of continuous medium or patterned medium with a low ratio of a linear bit density in a track direction as measured by the number of bits per inch (BPI) and a track density in a track crossing direction as measured by the number of tracks per inch (TPI), has the magneto resistive read head 100 having a high spatial resolution in the track crossing direction. The read head 100 is provided between two magnetic shields S1 and S2. The shields and the read head are formed on a side surface 26 perpendicular to a surface facing a disk of a head carrier 22. The head carrier 22 is supported by a suspension 20 with the side surface 26 of the head carrier 22 being oriented substantially parallel to a data track 43'. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
