Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the number of pieces of detected information of abnormal shadow candidates that is displayed, and to enhance efficiency of diagnostic reading of a medical image. SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus 2 carries out detection processing of abnormal shadow candidates. In a processing pattern 1 or 2 that performs detection processing 1 using a filter bank and detection processing 2 using characteristic amounts in series, all of abnormal shadow candidates are extracted. In a processing pattern 3 that carries out the processing 1 and the processing 2 in parallel, only those candidates which are difficult to be determined whether they are false positives or true positives or those which are difficult to be detected by a doctor because of their low visibility are extracted.
