Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for oligomerizing butene in which a raw material used has a sufficient butene concentration and hardly has catalyst poison. SOLUTION: The method for oligomerizing butene in the presence of a transition metal catalyst comprises using a hydrocarbon stream, in which all or a part of a starting material is composed of a hydrocarbon stream (1) and mainly contains butene, obtained from a hydrocarbon stream (2) having a small amount of butene as the starting material. The method for oligomerizing the butene comprises (a) carrying out extraction distillation of a saturated and unsaturated 4C hydrocarbon-containing stream (2) by using a polar extract to provide a tower top fraction (3) rich in a saturated hydrocarbon and a tower bottom fraction (4) containing rich in an unsaturated hydrocarbon and containing a polar extract, (b) separating the tower bottom fraction (4) into a tower top fraction (5) containing butene as the unsaturated hydrocarbon and a tower bottom fraction (6) containing the polar extract, (c) washing at least a part of the tower top fraction (5) with water or an aqueous solution and (d) drying a part of the tower top fraction (5) treated with the step (c) to provide the butene-containing hydrocarbon stream (1) hardly containing water.
