Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable terminal capable of stable contactless communication to an external reader/writer that performs contactless communication whatever the mode of usage may be. SOLUTION: The portable terminal comprises a contactless communication medium 5 for performing contactless communication with an external apparatus, an upper casing antenna 1 and a lower casing antenna 2 connected to the contactless communication medium 5, a sensor 3 for detecting the mode of usage of a terminal body; a switching circuit 6 for switching outputs of the upper casing antenna 1 and the lower casing antenna 2, and a control unit 4 for performing switching control of the switching circuit 6, in response to a detection result of the sensor 3. Consequently, the sensor 3 can detect the mode of usage of the terminal body and can detect an antenna which can perform satisfactory communication, in response to the detection result so that stable contactless communication is possible, whenever the portable terminal is directed with respect to R/W.
