Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive compact optical scanner by decreasing the number of component members necessary for detecting a scanning synchronization signal and simplifying the adjustment job of a synchronization detection optical system. SOLUTION: The optical scanner has a laser light source part 1, a rotating polygon mirror 3 which scans a light beam 2 emitted form the laser light source part 1, and a scanning lens 6 which focuses the scanning light on an object to be optically scanned 7. The optical scanner further includes an epi-receiving light receiving system which guides epi-reflection light 8 which is reflected on the object to be optically scanned 7 toward the vertical direction to a light receiving element 12 via again the rotating polygon mirror 3, a holed mirror 9, a deflection mirror 10 and a focusing lens 11. A rectangular prism 4 is arranged on the beginning side end of scanning above the scanning lens 6, a portion of laser light reflected and deflected with the rotating polygon mirror 3 is totally reflected with the rectangular prism 4, the totally reflected light is received by using the epi-receiving light receiving system, and a scanning synchronization signal which shows a predetermined scanning position in a main scanning direction is obtained.
