Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a folding portable telephone device which is freely openable/closable and turnable, capable of achieving miniaturization and cost-reduction of the device, and also, does not adversely affect external magnetic recording media. SOLUTION: Two light receiving/emitting elements 23a, 23b are laterally arranged above the surface of a lower unit 2. Reflective parts 13a, 13b, 13c, and 13d of the light receiving/emitting elements are laterally arranged on the surface and the rear face of an upper unit 1. Here, reflection efficiency of one of the reflective parts 13c, 13d on the rear face is set to half of that of the other in order to detect whether or not the telephone device is closed with a display part 11 placed outside. An opening/closing and turning state detection part 27 receives output (described as A and B) of the light receiving/emitting elements 23a, 23b and detects that the device is in an opening state when there is no output of both A and B, that the device is in a turning state at an angle of 90 degrees on either the right or the left corresponding to the output of either A or B when there is the output of either A or B, that the device is in the closing state when there is the output of both A and B and if differential output between A and B is zero, and that the device is in the closing state with the display part placed outside if there is the differential output.
