Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display whose contrast visual field angle is expanded in all vertical and horizontal directions. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display having a pair of substrates at least one of which has an electrode and which are disposed opposite to each other, a liquid crystal layer provided between the substrates and a first polarizing plate disposed on the outer side of the liquid crystal layer, a product Δn×d of the thickness d (μm) and refractive index anisotropy Δn of the liquid crystal layer is 0.2 to 1.2 μm, the alignment state of the liquid crystal layer is changed by applying electric fields of a binary or more value, average alignment tilt angles of the liquid crystal layer to the surface of the substrate when the electric field is applied and when no electric field is applied are different from each other, the first polarizing plate has a polarizing film, a pair of protective films disposed sandwiching the polarizing film and an optical anisotropic layer which is positioned on the outer side of the protective films and on the side nearer to the liquid crystal layer and wherein a disk-shaped compound is hybrid-aligned and at least one of the pair of protective layers satisfies 250-Re(633)≤Rth≤25+Re(633) (wherein Re(λ) denotes a front retardation value (nm) in the wavelength λnm and Rth (λ) denotes a retardation value in the film thickness direction in the wavelength λnm).
