Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direct methanol type fuel cell which achieves reduction in methanol crossover and securing of the quantity of fuel cell supplied to the catalyst layer simultaneously, and has a superior power generation characteristics without degrading utilization efficiency of fuel. SOLUTION: The fuel cell is equipped with a unit cell provided with an electrolyte membrane 11 having an anode 12 on one face and a cathode 13 on the other face, and the anode 12 has a catalyst layer 12a and a diffusion layer 12b, and its catalyst layer contacts the electrolyte membrane, and the diffusion layer 12b contacts the face on the other side of the face contacting the electrolyte membrane 11 of the catalyst layer 12a, and the methanol transmission flux value JGDLof the diffusion layer 12b of the anode and the methanol transmission flux value JPEMof the electrolyte membrane 11 satisfies the following relations: (i) JGDL=1×10-5-5×10-4mol/(cm2min.) and (ii) JGDL×JPEM≤1×10-8[mol/(cm2min.)]2.
