Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a homopolymer or a copolymer of a conjugated diene monomer and an aromatic vinyl monomer useful in a tire tread and a side wall rubber, which have an excellent abrasion resistance, tear property and bending property. SOLUTION: A copolymer of a conjugated diene monomer and an aromatic vinyl monomer having a high styrene content, a high trans-structure content and a high molecular weight can be obtained by using a catalyst system, which comprises (a) an organoaluminum compound, (b) an organolithium compound, and (c) a barium compound selected from (i) a barium salt of di(ehylene glycol) ethyl ether, (ii) a barium salt of di(ethylene glycol) propyl ether, (iii) a barium salt of di(ethylene glycol) hexyl ether, (iv) a barium salt of di(N,N-dimethylamino glycol) ethyl ether and (v) a barium salt of menthol in the presence of a polar modification agent comprising water, an alcohol, an amine, a thiol, a phosphate and a phosphite.
