Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phosphor which uses easily available LED as an excitation light source, enlarges the range of the excitation light from a ultraviolet to visible region and emits a light in a wide range from red to blue green. SOLUTION: The phosphor contains gallium oxide, an oxide or a sulfide of an alkaline earth metal, an europium compound and sulfur or a sulfur compound. The preparation process comprises mixing gallium oxide, europium oxide and an oxide of an alkaline earth metal in a mole ratio of (3.5-6.5):(0.05-0.5):(1-3) and subsequently heat-treating at 600°C or higher in a reducing atmosphere containing sulfur.
