PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steering system of steer-by-wire type equipped with an enhanced possibility of practical application, capable of turning the applicable vehicle wheels without resorting to the operating force applied to a steering operation member. SOLUTION: The steering system of a vehicle is equipped with an operational reaction force applying mechanism to give an operational reaction force by means of interlocking with the steering operation member 14, an operational reaction force applying device having a mechanism to change over between the interlocking condition and non-interlocking condition, and a coupling device 150 to couple together the operation member 14 and a wheel turning device 24 in such a way as separably, whereby the operation member 14 and the operational reaction force applying mechanism are put in interlocking in the case the operation member 14 and the wheel turning devcie 24 are separated, and in the case the operation member 14 and the wheel turning device 24 are coupled together, the operation member 14 and the operational reaction force applying mechanism are released from the interlocked condition. If the operation member 14 and the wheel turning device 24 are coupled together, a condition is established in which the operational reaction force is not applied to the operation member 14, and it is possible to make the steering operation relatively light, and on that point this assures a steering system equipped with a high practicable applicability.
