Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To dispense with complicated designation and labor and time for formatting a large capacity of a recording medium by dividing the recording medium into a plurality of areas. SOLUTION: When the recording capacity of the recording medium 106 is the recording capacity to be managed with a compatible format (S202), the initialization of the compatible format is made to be the initial value of an option to be presented to a user (S203). When the capacity exceeds the recording capacity to be managed with the compatible format (S202) and a preceding initialization constitution is partitioned (S204), a division format by the preceding initialization constitution is made to be the initial value. When the preceding initialization constitution is not partitioned (S204), an extended format is made to be the initial value (S206).
