Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device of which the CR viewing angle as well as the gradation inversion angle are improved. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes a pair of substrates 10 and 14 opposed to each other at least one of which has an electrode, a liquid crystal layer 12 of which the alignment is controlled by axes 11 and 13 of alignment which opposed faces of the pair of substrates have, a pair of a group of polarizers 1 to 6 and a group of polarizers 18 to 23 which are disposed with the liquid crystal layer 12 between them, and optical anisotropic layers 7 and 15 each of which consists of at least single layer and is provided between the liquid crystal layer and at least one of the pair of polarizers. Axes 8 and 16 of extinction of the optical anisotropic layers 7 and 15 cross the axes 11 and 13 of alignment of substrates 10 and 14 nearer to the layers respectively, and in-plane retardation of the optical anisotropic layers 7 and 15 is 30 to 80 nm, and the liquid crystal layer 12 has an alignment state varied in accordance with electric field application, whereby in-plane retardation of the liquid crystal layer 12 is varied, and a difference between the in-plane retardation of the optical anisotropic layers and that of the liquid crystal layer is minimum when a transmittance is minimum.
