Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a diagnosing technology for a spallation neutron source mercury target container capable of executing evaluation of damage and evaluation of deterioration due to fatigue of the mercury target container by precisely measuring an outer circumferential vibration of the spallation neutron source mercury target container installed inside (on the bottom of) a large-sized structure for producing neutrons in noncontact without being influenced by radiation from outside the structure. SOLUTION: The diagnosing technology comprises the steps of projecting, from a laser Doppler vibration meter, an incident beam onto the spallation neutron source mercury target container irradiated with a pulse incident proton beam for producing neutrons, receiving the reflection beam, acquiring a measurement signal and evaluating the damage and deterioration due to fatigue of the mercury target container on the basis of a specific characteristic of the measurement signal.
