Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a force necessary for separating a cap from a recording head and facilitate the cap separation action even if the cap covering the discharge opening of the recording head sticks to the recording head. SOLUTION: Step portions (or engagement portions) 35a and 35b are provided in the facing positions of the peripheral edges of the cap 35, and engagement portions (step portions ) 36a and 36b capable of engaging with the step portions (or engagement portions) are provided in the position corresponding to the step portions (or engagement portions) of the cap holder 36. When the cap holder is separated from a recording head away from the condition that the cap is contacted to the recording head 3, a force in the direction of separation of the cap is made to act from the engagement portions (or step portions) with a time difference.
