Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively provide a projection type image display device enhanced in quiet sound property. SOLUTION: The projection type image display device 10 is constituted of a light source part 11, a rod integrator 12, an optical switching part 13, a projection optical system 14, a control part 15 and a video display element 16. The optical switching part 13 is constituted of 1st to 3rd color separation optical systems 21 to 23, transmission type LCDs 26 to 28 and polarizing plates 31 and 32. The color separation optical system 21 is constituted of a dichroic mirror 36 and a mirror 37, the color separation optical system 22 is constituted of dichroic mirrors 38 and 39, and the color separation optical system 23 is constituted of a mirror 41 and a dichroic mirror 42. R, G and B light beams are respectively separated and taken out by the 1st to the 3rd color separation optical systems 21 to 23, and also switched by the transmission type LCDs 26 to 28 to become three color light beams or white illuminating light beams, and then radiated to the video display element 16, whereby image light is projected to a screen 29.
