Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light intensity modulation element which modulates light intensity irrespective of its small size and has a high conversion efficiency of the light to a second harmonic. SOLUTION: An optical waveguide directed to a direction is formed on a principal surface of a substrate composed of a nonlinear optical crystal. A polarization structure in the substrate thickness direction is periodically formed with alternately reversed polarity in the optical waveguide direction on the optical waveguide. In addition, first and second wavelength conversion parts to convert a part of incident infrared rays into the second harmonic are respectively formed on the optical waveguide. Furthermore, a first phase control part having a pair of electrodes placed opposite to each other while interposing the optical waveguide is formed between the first and second wavelength conversion parts.
