PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operating rope having remarkably improved overload durability by setting the rope pitch and a side strand pitch to respective optimum levels. SOLUTION: The operating rope 1 has a double-twist structure having a twisting direction of ZSZ or SZS and is produced by twisting a plurality of wires 30 to form a side strand 3 and twisting a plurality of the side strands 3 around a core strand 2 obtained by twisting a plurality of wires 20. The rope pitch is set to 6-7 times the outer diameter of the rope and the side strand pitch is set to 7-10.5 times the outer diameter of the side strand. The core strand 2 has a triple layer structure composed of an intermediate layer 2A and an outer layer 2B formed around a core wire and has a parallel twist structure. The core strand 2 preferably has worrington twist. The core strand 2 is composed of 19 wires 20, the number of the side strands 3 is 8 and each side strand is composed of 7 wires.
