PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for a surface smoothing treatment of paper or paperboard designed to prevent corrosion of calender rolls 8 or a frame of a calender apparatus 2 with mists without rewetting a paper web A passed through a dryer apparatus 1 and dried. SOLUTION: The apparatus for the surface smoothing treatment of the paper or paperboard is composed of the dryer apparatus 1 equipped with an exhaust hood 5 in the upper part and the calender apparatus 2 having the calender rolls 8 for sandwiching the paper web A passed through the dryer apparatus 1 and smoothing the surface. The apparatus is composed as follows. Dryer rolls of the dryer apparatus 1 are arranged so that the final dryer roll is located in the upper stage and a water application apparatus 6 for wetting the surface side of the paper web A wound around the final dryer roll with water is installed between the final dryer roll and the dryer roll which is one roll this side of the final dryer roll in the lower stage in the dryer apparatus. Only the surface on the side opposite to the surface in contact with the dryer roll is wetted with water while drying the paper web A with the final dryer roll so as carry out a calender treatment with the calender apparatus 2.
