Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a compound (inhibitor against cartilage cell destruction) that minimizes extinction (cell death) of cartilage cells by hydrogen peroxide and keeps the absolute number of the cells at a high level. SOLUTION: This inhibitor against cartilage cell destruction is at least one kind selected from the group consisting of 2-methoxy-methylphenol, 2-methoxy-4-ethylphenol and 2-ethoxy-4-methylphenol. Since the cell death of cartilage cells (reduction in number of cartilage cells) induced by hydrogen peroxide produced in vivo is minimized by this invention, accordingly, cartilage cell destructive (cartilage cell differentiation obstructive) diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, are prevented or treated. The use of the inhibitor against cartilage cell destruction together with another medicine having a different mechanism keeps much more the number of cartilage cells and effectively prevents or treats the diseases.
