Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for highly accurately measuring a cetane number of fuel, while the fuel is used for operating an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: Pressure P in a combustion chamber is detected by a pressure detecting means, and volume V of the combustion chamber is detected by a volume detecting means. When a value near a ratio of specific heat of air-fuel mixture is a constant κ, a product PVκis calculated as a heat generation parameter, by multiplying the pressure P by a value obtained by getting the volume V raised to the κth power. In a rated operational state of the internal combustion engine, the cetane number of the fuel is measured based on variation in the heat generation parameter PVκafter the fuel is injected into the combustion chamber.
