Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element having a polymer liquid crystal layer capable of properly keeping orientation in heating and having an excellent charge transportation property, and thereby capable of efficiently emitting light; and to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: This organic electroluminescent element 20 is equipped with: an organic function layer 21 including the polymer liquid crystal layer; and a positive electrode 12 and a negative electrode 17 for sandwiching the organic function layer 21 therebetween. The polymer liquid crystal layer is so structured that a polymerizing liquid crystal compound is obliquely deposited in vacuum to form a thin film; then liquid crystal molecules are oriented in a predetermined direction by heat-treating them; and thereafter polymerizing groups are photo-polymerized to fix an arrangement.
