Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a reflection liquid crystal display device using as a display medium cholesteric liquid crystal capable of providing excellent black display. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is constituted by laminating a circular polarizing element 11 (linear polarizing plate 12 and retardation plate 13), a scatter layer 14, and a liquid crystal display element 15. The liquid crystal display element 15 has a chiral nematic liquid crystal held between substrates 51 and 52, and electrodes 53 and 54 and alignment layers 55 and 56 are provided on opposite surfaces of the substrates 51 and 52. The liquid crystal changes into a planar array or focal conic array according to voltages applied from the electrodes 53 and 54. The alignment layer 56 is rubbed and the rubbing direction is orthogonal to the axis of absorption of the linear polarizing plate 12 and along the length of the electrode 54.
