Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently produce isotropic pitch by shortening the time for the heat treatment of carbon material components as a raw material and obtain carbon fiber of high strength by using the isotropic pitch. SOLUTION: In the presence of an oxidative gas, at least one selected from heavy oil and pitch is treated with heat to produce optically isotropic pitch. In this case, the carbonaceous components are treated with heat in the presence of additives that can promote the crosslinking reaction or the polymerization reaction of the carbonaceous components (for example, a radical initiator, a crosslinking agent or the like). Further, the resultant isotropic pitch is spun and the spun pitch fiber is subjected to infusiblization to prepare the infusible fiber and the fusiblized pitch fiber may be carbonized or subjected to the activation treatment followed by the carbonization treatment, thereby producing carbon fiber.
