Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure the gap between the nozzle surface of a liquid ejection head and a platen quickly and accurately without damaging the nozzle surface. SOLUTION: The liquid ejector comprises a platen for supporting a recording matter from below, a liquid ejection head for ejecting liquid from the nozzle surface facing the platen to the recording matter while reciprocating above the recording matter supported by the platen, a light emitting section located below the platen and emitting light toward the nozzle surface of the liquid ejection head, a light receiving section located below the platen and receiving light emitted from the light emitting section and reflected on the nozzle surface of the liquid ejection head, and a section for outputting the distance between the platen and the nozzle surface based on the light received at the light receiving section.
