Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide polyphenylene ethynylenes which are useful as water-soluble functional materials, e.g. materials that emit fluorescence in an aqueous solution, etc. SOLUTION: The polyphenylene ethynylene containing a hydrophilic dendron side chain is represented by formula (1) (wherein two Rs are each independently a dendron residue which comprises a repeating unit containing an aromatic ring and has a hydrophilic substituent; and m is a natural number indicating a polymerization degree). A preferable example of the dendron residue is one which comprises an aromatic polyether structure comprising 3,5-dioxybenzyl group as the repeating unit and has the hydrophilic substituent at its end. In a method of its synthesis, a bromine-substituted dendron side chain precursor compound, 2,5-bis(trimethylsilyl)hydroquinone, potassium carbonate and 18-crown-6-ether are reacted to obtain a diethylbenzene containing a hydrophilic dendron side chain, and the diethylbenzene is reacted with p-phenylene diiodide in the presence of an oxidation catalyst, a cocatalyst and an amine base.
