Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus with a means for surely and accurately detecting inferiority of operation of a print head. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with a detecting means for detecting a position for starting movement of the print head, and a comparing means for comparing the number of pulses of an outward trip moving from the position for starting the movement to a position for completing the movement in the sub-scanning direction with the number of pulses of a return trip moving from the position for completing the movement to the position for starting the movement, and is constituted so that the inferiority of the operation of the print head is judged by the result of the comparison.
