Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the occurrence of birefringence induced in an optical waveguide with a quartz substrate. SOLUTION: The optical waveguide 10 includes the quartz substrate 11, a buffer layer 12 prepared on the quartz substrate 11, cores 13a, 13b prepared on the buffer layer 12, and an upper clad 14 prepared on the buffer layer 12 covering the cores 13a, 13b. The thermal expansion coefficient of the buffer layer 12 and the thermal expansion coefficient of the upper clad 14 are set to be almost equal, and thus, the stresses applied to the cores 13a, 13b become isotropic substantially, therefore, the occurrence of birefringence can be suppressed effectively.
