Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a camera which can be focused quickly and accurately to any object within the field to be photographed. SOLUTION: When an AF switch 42 is turned on, a CPU 34 makes the space between a focus lens 12 and an image sensor 14 stepwise displaced, and prescribes a plurality of optimum spaces, respectively corresponding to a plurality of focus areas formed on the image sensor 14, based on a field image caught by the image sensor 14 each time the space is displaced. Then, data showing a plurality of prescribed optimum spaces are held in a register 34r. Thereafter, when any of focus areas is selected as an effective focus area via a focus switching button 44, the CPU 34 sets the space as the optimum space, corresponding to the effective focus area based on the data in the register 34r.
