Abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To acquire the image data of a check with high resolution and to perform recognition processing of magnetic ink character (MIC) included in the acquired image data in a short time. SOLUTION: The image reader comprises an image acquiring section 11 for reading the image on a check 70 with high resolution, a data processing section 12 for storing the image data in a specific region recorded with MIC in the high resolution image data thus read out while converting into low resolution, and a section 14 performing character recognition processing by reading out the image data in the low resolution region recorded with MIC. Volume of data required for recognition processing of MIC can thereby be reduced sharply while sustaining high resolution as a whole. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
