Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal halide lamp free from crack at lighting with a Ce halide and a Ca halide sealed in an arc tube formed of ceramics, as well as a lighting device using the same. SOLUTION: In the metal halide lamp provided with the arc tube 20 formed of translucent ceramics, a pair of opposed electrodes, and the halide sealed in the arc tube 20, L/D is to be not more than 1, when an inner diameter of the arc tube 20 is D (mm) and an inter-tip distance of the electrodes is L (mm), and Hca/Hceis to be not more than 0.4 and 15 or less, when a sealed volume of the Ca halide is Hca(mol), and that of the Ce halide is Hce(mol), whereby, a crack can be restrained, and a lamp efficiency can be improved.
