Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character input apparatus which stores part of speech information and field information of inputted character strings and is used to narrow down input candidates at the next input and to provide the character input apparatus in which character strings in a cooccurrence relation with the inputted character strings, character strings in pairs, and character strings related by attributes defined by thesaurus information are also used as the input candidates. SOLUTION: An auxiliary information update part 2 retrieves a part of speech dictionary part 7 by the character string inputted from an input part 5 by using a part of speech dictionary retrieval part 6, and the character strings and the part of speech information are stored in an input candidate storage part 1 as auxiliary information to the character strings. The auxiliary information stores date information, frequency information, and priority information as well as the part of speech information. An input candidate management part 3 selects character strings to be input candidate from the character strings stored in the input candidate storage part 1 by using the auxiliary information and displays them to an input candidate display part 4.
