Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface mounted optical isolator whose assembly man-hour is reduced and which is more excellent in productivity. SOLUTION: In the optical isolator where an optical isolator element consisting of a tabular Faraday rotator and a polarizer placed on an alignment substrate and an arched magnet whose respective end faces abut on two spots on the alignment substrate so as to cover over the Faraday rotator, the alignment substrate has constitution where a level difference whose height is different between in one abutting position and in the other abutting position of the magnet is formed.
